“Big action movies are what I enjoy, but they should also include elements of human connection,” explained Johansson, known for playing Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow across eight MCU films from “Iron Man 2” in 2010 to “Black Widow” in 2021, as reported by People.

Even with the creation of ‘Black Widow’ and my involvement in both the production process and the storyline development—particularly the relationship between Natasha and Yelena—I believe there’s a method to preserve the essence of human connections, familial bonds, and feelings of disappointment,” Johansson stated. This week, Johansson attended the Cannes Film Festival with her directorial debut ‘E Eleanor the Great,’ featuring an ensemble cast including June Squibb, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Jessica Hecht.

According to an official Cannes synopsis, the movie “breathes life into the sharp-witted and defiantly difficult 94-year-old Eleanor Morgenstein, who navigates a perilous journey following a significant heartbreak.” The same synopsis characterizes the film as “a humorously touching examination of how narratives we encounter transform into those we share ourselves,” as noted by People.

Variety reported that Johansson’s “Eleanor the Great” garnered a five-minute standing ovation following its debut at Cannes, where she was joined by her spouse, Colin Jost. At the event, Johansson expressed that showcasing the movie at Cannes felt like fulfilling a lifelong aspiration.

“We are deeply honored to be here with you all tonight,” she said. “As you might guess, when working on an indie film such as ours, financial gain isn’t exactly what’s driving everyone — shocker.
