Under the warm May sun, the lemon groves, having recently taken down their winter hail protection nets, fill the air with their fragrant blossoms. The trees, heavy with small, light-yellow fruits, line the narrow path climbing alongside the cliff overlooking the town of Amalfi.
Since I left the sole main street of the town named after the Amalfi Coast an hour ago and turned onto the steep Valle delle Ferriere hiking trail, I have not encountered another soul.
The throngs of summer visitors have become well-known along Italy’s best-loved coast, which boasts both natural wonders and remarkable engineering feats that allow picturesque towns to be perched precariously on the cliffsides.
However, visiting during spring isn’t merely about avoiding the crowded high-season rush. In my view, April and May stand out as ideal times along the coast, offering opportunities to experience local religious festivities, enjoy invigorating walks amidst blooming flowers, and savor traditional Easter delicacies.

It is an historic Amalfi estate that remains under the ownership of the same family, who converted their residence into lodging for guests during the latter part of the 19th century.

One particular path starts at the northern end of Amalfi’s main thoroughfare, once you have passed beyond the gaudy yellow stores selling lemon-inspired trinkets.

The starting point is across from the Paper Museum, a modest exhibit that’s highly recommended for gaining insight into Amalfi’s renowned and ancient tradition of paper production which spans several centuries.
The path called Valle delle Ferriere runs through the center of the lemon terraces, following the appropriately named Via Paradiso.
You frequently see stacks of lengthy wooden beams propped against the walls, prepared for manual lifting up the slope to construct the supportive trellises.
The path subsequently plunges deeply into the shadowy forests lining a vast fissure, going past the sporadic haunting remnants of a mill that formerly operated bustling production activities.

As you ascend, you’ll encounter refreshingly clear but frigidly cold streams and waterfalls that become notably plentiful during springtime.
You can trace the path right up to the Valle delle Ferriere nature reserve, an exuberant and moist ravine featuring massive sponge-like cliffs adorned with cascading moss and ancient ferns.

However, in May, I stroll through the lemon groves of Hotel Santa Caterina virtually unaccompanied, secure a front-row sunbed at the beach club daily, and enjoy meals at a table with an idyllic seascape vista during breakfast.
When I leave at the end of this month, I step onto the terrace for one final view of the shoreline.
The tiles lie strewn with fallen wisteria flowers, dislodged by the gentle morning wind. “This signifies that summer has arrived,” observes a waiter as he sweeps up the lavender petals, along with the remnants of tranquil springtime.
