Fetterman Hits Back: Senate Duties Resume as Health Questions Were ‘Weaponized’

The struggles have been “turned into a weapon” against him, causing him to attend more votes and hearings, even though he feels many are not productive.

During an interview with the

“My physician cautioned many years back: Once it becomes known that you are seeking assistance with

People will use that as a weapon,” Fetterman said to the outlet. “Even simple matters get twisted. This is precisely what occurred.

“It surprised me that people would use the fact that I received assistance as a weapon,” he said.

Fetterman endured a significant stroke during his 2022 election bid and admitted himself to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in February 2023 for treatment.

responsibilities.

Concerns over

his mental health

emerged again following the publication of a letter from his ex-chief of staff, who warned that he was deteriorating, sparking new concerns regarding his conduct and suitability for the position.

Following his discharge from Walter Reed, Fetterman has missed more votes than almost all other senators, ranking just above those who have major personal or political commitments such as campaigns or caretaking responsibilities.

Fetterman has been participating in recent hearings to showcase his mental acuity, though he admits that he derives neither pleasure nor fascination from the mundane tasks involved in being a senator.

He once described being separated from his family as “the worst part of the job,” and explained that family time is more of a priority.

The votes I skipped were mostly just formalities; these ‘bed check’ votes happen routinely on Monday nights,” Fetterman explained, talking about the typical evening sessions in the Senate. “I needed to choose between being present merely to cast a procedural vote for a few moments or spending quality time with my daughter on Monday evenings.

Fetterman confessed to missing the votes scheduled for Thursday evenings so he could be with his father, who had recently suffered a heart attack.

“I’d rather visit my dad than cast a wasted vote,” he stated.

Fetterman isn’t fond of participating in hearings and tends to steer clear of holding town hall meetings as he wishes to avoid interacting with protesters. He mentioned that he exited the caucus group chat due to feeling inundated by notifications and finding the conversations unimportant.

The senator certainly has allies in Congress who attempt to involve him.

“John is holding up,” Senator Peter Welch informed them.

John is holding up. It’s safe to say this situation is quite stressful. This is indeed a tough ordeal.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer recently asked his Democratic colleagues to provide additional backing for Fetterman and also had a meeting with him to follow up during increased examination.

Last week, Senator Amy Klobuchar had a meeting with Fetterman to talk about his focuses within the Agriculture Committee.

“I like collaborating with him and value his insights,” she stated.

Even though Fetterman openly expresses dissatisfaction with his work responsibilities, he states that he is dedicated to completing his term as initially elected, which runs through 2028.
