A medical professional was summoned to the filming location of a new comedy-drama shot along the Welsh coastline to ensure that the performers didn’t get chilled—despite indications that production took place during the summertime.
“The Ballad of Wallis Island,” featuring Carey Mulligan, Tim Key, and Tom Basden, is believed to have been shot in and around Pembrokeshire.
During a screening in London, Director James Griffiths informed the PA news agency that a medical professional took the temperatures of Mulligan and the other cast members because of the chilly conditions, mentioning that Basden looked “bluish.”
When questioned about whether the film was shot during summertime, Oscar-nominated actor Mulligan, who hails from a family with roots in Llandeilo, Carmarthenshire, replied, “It’s set in Wales.”
In the movie, Mulligan performs as part of a duo from what was once a folk band, alongside her former partner portrayed by Basden, who rose to fame through his role in The IT Crowd.
They receive payment to perform together at an event on the island of Wallis, which is organized by a devoted admirer and lottery victor portrayed by comic actor Key.
During the gala screening at the Ham Yard Hotel in London, Griffiths commented, “Tom particularly had a bluish hue throughout many of the shots.”
I believe we had a medic coming in, and you were involved as well, correct [Mulligan]? The medic was apparently taking your temperature to check for signs of the cold. It was extremely chilly.
Mulligan mentioned it held particular significance for her since she had recently given birth around the time they began shooting.
It’s simply linked to all these beautiful recollections of my child when they were young.
You all surrounded us, everyone was hugging her, and we spent some time as a group. It means a lot to me.
Key stated, “We filmed the short version 18 years ago, and we’re really excited about returning to Wales. It feels like an integral part of the movie. Strange as it may seem.”
Basden mentioned that the filming location was “beautiful,” though it had “unpredictably changeable weather.”
The initial short film titled “The One And Only Herb McGwyer Plays Wallis Island” received a nomination for the 2008 Bafta Short Film Award. In this production, Key and Basden took on the leading parts.
