The crowd offered him an extended and thunderous standing ovation. Incredulous, Panahi raised his arms and stepped backward before clapping for his team and others nearby. Up on stage, he received warm welcomes and cheers from Cannes festival jury head.

When Panahi stepped onto the stage, he declared that nothing was more important than liberty in his nation.

“Let’s keep hoping,” he concluded.
Even though Panahi pleaded for liberty, he has stated that living abroad is not his preference. He intended to return to Tehran by plane on Sunday.
Shortly after a significant power outage struck southeastern France on Saturday, the festival’s closing ceremony took place. Police suspect that the incident might have resulted from an act of arson.
