Co-op Set to Transform 2,400 Stores Across New Zealand by 2026

Co-op has pioneered the initiative by being the first big supermarket to introduce electronic shelf labels across all its stores.

The store claims that the expansion, which is now reaching 40 outlets per week, aims to update processes and cut down on waste.

It is anticipated that the technology will be implemented in around 1,500 outlets by the close of this year, followed by an additional 900 locations by late 2026.

Several other stores such as Asda, Waitrose, and Lidl have previously tested this technology, yet Co-op will be the initial company to incorporate it into all of its locations.

They are collaborating with the French retail technology company VusionGroup, which has existing partnerships with Walmart in the U.S. and Morrisons.

Steven Logue, who leads operations at Co-op, stated: “These digital tags could improve product details and openness, eliminate paper usage, and simplify routine activities such as fulfilling online orders — all of which can boost efficiency, aid our expansion goals, and elevate the shopping encounter for both our members and customers.”

However, it’s clear that the computer systems managing the electronic labels were unaffected.

What advantages do electronic shelf labels offer?

The fresh digital label system connects the production area with inventory control systems. These enable employees to swiftly modify promotional details and showcase essential item data such as allergy warnings and place of manufacture.

In future, the electronic labels will be able to ‘flash’ to show staff which items need to be stocked – and could also be used to help Co-op staff fulfil on-demand orders.

The store claims that the digital tags will also reduce paper usage.

Roy Hargan, CEO of VusionGroup UK and Ireland, commented: “We are extremely pleased about this strategic alliance. The Co-operative Society’s principles resonate strongly with ours, and this joint effort showcases how technological advancements can promote environmental responsibility and enhance both customer and employee experiences within stores.”

The co-operative society’s deployment highlights their continued dedication to investing in brick-and-mortar outlets. These stores significantly contribute to British town centres, positively affecting the areas they serve. They also provide enhanced flexibility for promptly addressing shifting market conditions and consumer demands.

Where are these being implemented?

Currently, 340 Co-op branches already feature the electronic shelf labels.

While we don’t have an exhaustive list of all branches that have already received the electronic label updates, you shouldn’t have to wait very long for your nearest location to get upgraded.
